Ramsdens Mastercard® Prepaid Travel Card FAQs

What are Prepaid Travel cards?

Ramsdens Mastercard® Prepaid Cards are used to buy and spend currency.

Available as a Euro or US Dollar card, you can purchase online or from one of our branches. This card won’t have your name on it, but it can be loaded, activated and used immediately. Your card can then be taken with you when you go away and used to pay for bills, trips etc wherever you see the Mastercard® Acceptance Mark.

They are different from credit and debit cards and work like pay-as-you-go mobile phones where you need to load money on to them in the first instance. So, each time you use the card to purchase something or withdraw cash at an ATM, the amount is deducted from the cards' balance.

The cards are intended to be re-loaded with funds and used every time you travel abroad up until the expiry date on the card. Please see the fee table for maximum loading limits.

Ramsdens Mastercard® Prepaid Cards could be great for people who:

  • Regularly travel abroad, and want an easy and safe way* to buy, carry and spend travel money.
  • Are looking for a flexible alternative to travellers' cheques, physical cash and credit or debit cards.
  • Want great FX rates, and don’t want to worry about fluctuating rates when abroad.
  • Want to reduce the risk of overspending when they are away.
  • All applicants must be 18 years old, and over, and a UK resident. Acceptance is subject to successful identification verification.

Buying and spending currency using the card is easy. Simply:

  • Purchase your travel card online or from a Ramsdens branch nationwide
  • Load your card instore or online by creating a web account
  • Retrieve your PIN following the instructions provided with your card
  • Take your card with you when you travel and spend wherever you see the Mastercard® Acceptance Mark
  • Top up your card online, when your cash runs low during your trip, or in time for your next holiday

How is money loaded onto the cards?

Funds can be transferred from an existing debit card onto the Ramsdens Mastercard® Prepaid Card when you buy the card.

For all cards money can be loaded onto the card when it runs low, by logging in to your personal web account and moving money from an existing debit card. Cards can also be loaded in store by cash, credit or debit card.

What happens if my card is lost, stolen or damaged?

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged you must get in touch with us as soon as you can using 0800 0835284 if calling from the UK, or +44(0)1159 577420 if calling from outside the UK. You should treat your Card like cash in a wallet. If it is lost or stolen, you may lose some or all of your money held on it, in the same way as if you lost your wallet. As a result, you must keep your card safe and not let anyone else use it. You must keep your PIN secret at all times.

We recommend that you regularly check the balance of your card and recent statement online from your personal web account to ensure that all transactions are accounted for.

Please note that if the card is lost or stolen whilst abroad, unfortunately we are not able to send a replacement to a foreign destination.  Your new card will instead be sent to the registered UK address.

What do I need to do when I receive a replacement card?

If your new card replaces a card which has been lost or stolen, then you will need to call 01244 770543 (Calls charged at standard network rate. Lines are open 24/7) to activate it and to receive your card PIN. However, if your new card simply replaces a card which was damaged then your card will already be activated and you can continue using your existing PIN.
